Grace Lutheran Church -Everett
Grace Lutheran Church was a mission-oriented vision of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Everett, Washington. For a number of years it had been under consideration to establish a mission in the south Everett area. Families of Immanuel, living in this area, would be the fledgling congregation with the Northwest District of Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod supervising the beginning of this mission congregation. The construction of the church began early in 1959.
In January of 1959 the District's board of directors extended a call to Pastor Walter Sylwester, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Roseburg, Oregon. In a special service on July 19th he was commissioned at Immanuel Lutheran to become the first pastor to serve the Grace Lutheran congregation.
On August 30th, 1959, the church was dedicated with approximately 250 attending this special service. Rev. Roland Frantz, pastor of Trinity Lutheran at Olympia, Washington, and also a member of the district's Board of Directors was the guest speaker.
The first regular service was held on Sunday, September 6th, 1959, with 124 attending the service and 84 attending Sunday school and adult Bible study. The mission began with approximately 35 communicant members and their families. By the end of 1959 it had grown to 51 communicant members.
In early 1960, a committee consisting of Mr. Rudolph Kahns, Mr. Harry Weitenhagen and Pastor Sylwester prepared a constitution and a set of by-laws. The voters' assembly accepted the proposed constitution and by-laws on June 16th, 1960. In a Sunday service on March 26th, 1961 all members present signed the constitution and by-laws.
Over the years Grace Lutheran Church has had six pastors and three interim pastors. They are Pastor Walter Sylwester (1959 - 1972), Pastor David Prinz (1972 - 1980), Pastor Rick Zeh (1980 - 1986), Interim Pastor Richard Weiland, Pastor Robert Hendrix (1986 - 2000), Interim Pastor Donald Koenig, Pastor Dwight Schultz (2001 - 2016), Interim Pastor Art Werfelmann (2016 - 2019), and at present Pastor Mark Anderson (2019).
During the 60 years of Grace Lutheran they have had special celebrations commemorating milestones in the history of the church. On September 7th, 1969, they celebrated the tenth anniversary. The next special celebration was the twenty-fifth year with a service on September 9th, 1984. On August 29th, 1999, there was a special thanksgiving and celebration service for the 40th birthday of Grace. On August 29th, 2004, the members and special committees were joined together to make the 45th anniversary a very special day which was pleasing in the sight of God. The day started with a communion service at 11:00 am. Immediately after the service was the annual church picnic.
